SMITHFIELD STRIKERS BEATEN

HOLD-UP RAPIDLY COLLAPSING

(Received 11 a.m.) LONDON. February’ 6

The Smithfield strike appears to bo collapsing. The men are expected to resume work in the week-end. They were beaten by the swift organisation of transport and by temporary meat depots at railway stations and docks and secret points in the suburbs. The strikers sought the help of the dockers and railway workers, who refused, as their union leaders were opposed to the strike. The whole of the 400 tons of meat, which has arrived at Smithfield since the strike broke out. was sold yesterday under police protection. Prices for all supplies slightly advanced on the suburban market.

The strikers admit that they gambled on winning in four days, and lost because the butchers easily obtained alternative supplies.
