NORTHLAND’S TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
We have on - many occasions emphasised the wonderful tourist asset which Northland possesses in the shape of landscape, seascape, legend and history. There is no part of the Dominion -more richly endowed in these respects, and it may be confidently anticipated that when New Zealanders awaken to the charms of the territory they will think of Northland when planning holiday tours. Overseas visitors to the Dominion will also turn their steps northward when they arrive in the country. However, a prerequisite is publicity, and this is a matter in which there, should have been more co-operation between tourist and other agencies, local and Dominion, than there has been in the past. It is to be feared that the Tourist Department has overlooked Northland largely because of the capital which the State has invested in what are unquestionably great show places. It is only natural, perhaps, that this should be so, for “where the treasure is there will the heart be also.” It is very necessary that everything possible should be done to make the attractions of Northland widely known, and it is to be hoped that as a result of the deliberations of the Tourist League conference held at Auckland this week, definitely good results will be obtained. The league is doing fine work, and the Tourist Department might well act upon the recommendation that Whangarei and Northland should be given more prominence in official publicity
