WELL-BUILT COTTAGES

CONVENIENCE AND ECONOMY.

Mr D. Archibald has given a good lead in building two neat, well-finished cottages with all conveniences, which, as a result of good planning, he has been able to let at a figure which represents a more reasonable proportion of the ordinary man’s income than is customarily asked as rent. The cottages are of four rooms, with a bathroom and washhouse under the same roof. The bathroom and washhouse are combined, and any first objection there might be to this, quickly disappears because of the excellent finish of this part of the building, and the convenient layout. The copper stand, and washtubs, are of concrete, as is also the double chimney serving the sitting-room and kitchen range. In anticipation of the sewerage system which Kaitaia will have some day, earthenware pipes neatly cemented at the joints, and with all that is necessary to conform to the most stringent by-laws, have been laid and connected with the washhouse and sink. To serve the purposes of an outhouse or Shed, |tße double tank-stand has been properly roofed and boarded all round. The floor of a small verandah at the back is of concrete, as also are the front steps. There is a high pressure hot water system, and the cupboards, while not reducing space in the kit-chen-dining room, meet fully a housewife’s requirements. The fireplace above, and at the sides of the range, has been faced with, white tiles with black borders. In the sitting room is a small, neat fireplace permitting of comfort during the winter, with the greatest economy of fuel. Wardrobes have been built in flush with the walls, and the lighting throughout is excellent. A hurricane wire fence is to be erected in front with single and double gates. The builders, Messrs, Worth and' Webber, completed the two cottages in two months.
