FRUITGROWERS HARD HIT
SEEKING RELIEF FROM GALE DAMAGE
[Special to “Northern Advocate.” j AUCKLAND, This Day.
Steps are being taken by fruitgrowing organisations in the Auckland district to obtain some relief from the heavy losses suffered as a result of the gale. The plight of the orchardists was outlined in a message, sent by the Gratia Fruitgrowers’ Association to the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Lee Martin, and a member of the district, Mr H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Justice, yesterday.
The message asked that some measure of relief be given, to stay over the hardship that all were confronted with. It was estimated that the district had suffered a loss ol 50,000 cases of marketable fruit, as well as several thousand trees.
“Something, must be done,” an orchardist said yesterday. “The gale has made a shocking mess. It is not only this year’s crop that we are worrying about, but also those for a number of years to come. Some growers are ruined, and must have assistance to carry on.”
