COSTLESS CURRENCY PROPOSAL
DARGAVILLE HARBOUR BRIDGE MOTION WITHDRAWN
After a long discussion at the meeting of the Dargaville Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night, it was decided to invite the views of the North Auckland Association upon the matter of whether the Government should be asked to consider the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, or tunnel, as a national undertaking.
Mr A. Costello had previously moved that the Government be asked to issue paper currency against the national credit for the construction of the bridge or tunnel. He said that the proposals of the new Government in respect of national credit afforded New Zealand an opportunity of producing work of national importance, without the added cost of interest.
This suggestion was supported by Mr C. N. Taylor, but was withdrawn in favour of one asking the Government to consider the matter as a national work.
On the grounds that the scheme had been brought to a stage where definite progress appeared likely by the local bodies of Auckland city and suburbs, without the assistance of the Dargaville borough, Mr F. A. Jones opposed the substituted motion. He thought that action of th.e kind proposed would now savour of interference.
