DIVERS INSPECT RANGATIRA

SURVEY OF DAMAGE [Per Press Association. — Copyright. ] WELLINGTON, This Day. A rough estimate of the extent of the damage to the inter-island steamer Rangatira has been made by divers, and the work of patching the holes is well in hand. When this is completed the steamer will be docked. The principal damage that has been located by the divers consists of a large rent in the bottom under No. 1 hold, running fore and aft, a distance of 12ft. and a number of other holes in the bottom under No. 2 hold. The holes are being blocked temporarily, and collision mats placed over them to enable the interior to be pumped out. No decision has been yet made about holding an official inquiry into the j mishap. Final decision rests with the Minister of Marine, Mr Fraser, who is at present visiting the south. Officers’ repoxds will be submitted as soon as possible to the Minister, who, it is anticipated, will be in a position, before the end of the week to decide whether a magistrate and two assessors should be appointed to hold an inquiry.
