MAKING CONTACT WITH OUTSIDE WORLD

For quite a number of hours the only contact Northland had with the outside world immediately after the storm was by amateur transmitting radio stations.

Good work was done in Whangarei by Mr A. Snow, of Wallace Street, the operator of Station IHJ, who. on Sunday kept in touch with IJD Dargaville, owned by Mr D. Colmore-Wil-liams and with Auckland in transmitting emergency messages.

By permission of the postal authorities, Mr Snow last night kept up a two-way conversation with IKY station in Auckland, operated by a Mr Brown.

By this method Mr J. Skow, the Northern patrol, spoke for two hours to the A.A. headquarters in Auckland, detailing the position of Northern roads.

Later on Sunday evening the Whangarei Pest Office made radio contact also and transmitted many vital items. One line of morse was restored to Auckland last night.
