“THE ADVOCATE” GETS THERE

The ‘Northern Advocate” mail car, which left Whangarei at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon/ loaded with mails and papers, arrived at Kawqkawa without mishap, and, by following Mr. E. Taylor’s large lorry, safely negotiated the flood wqter just beyond Kawakawa.

At that time the water was 2 feet 6 inches deep and covered the road for a distance of approximately five chains. They got through safely and, a mile beyond the Turntable Hill they were held up at a small bridge which had been washed away., The mails and papers were immedi-* ately transferred to the “Advocate’s” northern car, which was waiting on the other side and reached Ohaeawai at 6 p.m. From there all the mails were forwarded by other services to their respective destinations. Taaffe’s service met the “Advocate” car at Ohaeawai and took on the Kaitaia mails, via Kaeo.

The return trip this morning w r as accomplished with ease, the flood water having dropped about a foot, although it was .still necessary for small cars to make use of Taylor’s lorry.

The bridge beyond Turntable Hill was repaired last night.
