ASSAULT ON EVEREST THIS YEAR
(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, February 2. The advance party for the Everest climbing expedition, comprising the leader, Mr Hugh Ruttledge, Mr Noel Humphreys and Lieutenant Gavin, has j gone to India. Mr Ruttledge said the assault on Everest would probably be between May 20 and June 10. “Then,” he said, “we will have a i better chance than did our predecessors, owing to our greatly improved oxygen apparatus. If, after leaving the highest camp, 27,800 ft, we reach the summit, 1200 ft higher, and return to the camp within 15 hours, we shall have done extraordinarily well. If we succeed we shall stay at the top only a few minutes ©wins’ to the I
p only a few minutes owing to the cold, which is so intense that the human body cannot stand it longer. “We shall probably place a Union Jack on the ‘top of the world’ if we get there, but the climb will be so arduous that we may not be able to carry the extra weight.”
