MILITARY SANCTIONS.

The Christian, attitude toward military sanctions was discussed by the

Archbishop of York, Dr. Temple, in a 1 recent address. Dr. Temple said; There are some people who contend that we should always stop short of military sanctions. I do not believe you can draw that line in practice. I think we have got to face up to the fact that economic sanctions always may involve military action because they may lead to the other nation deciding to resort to it. Some say that any form of modern fighting is ‘so horrible and involves so much suffering to innocent people that we must make up our minds that we will have nothing to do with it at all. But, supposing your lawless nation disregards your economic sanctions, what you really say is that anyone who is so prepared to use these horrors must be allowed to succeed. Unless you are prepared to take the line that anyone who is willing to resort to these horrors must be allowed to succeed, you must be allowed to succeed, you must must be prepared to use whatever kind •■'f force is sufficiently effective to resist. You will be reluctant to employ certain kinds of methods, but, if they turn out to be the only means ot stopping the lawless nation from gaining -its ways, then I think one should say you are bound to resort to them
