VISIT TO SOUTH
FARMERS CHEERFUL AND CONFIDENT.
Mr T. H. Kenny, with Mrs Kenny and family, have returned to Kaitaia after a holiday extending over a fortnight in the south, the major portion of the time being spent at Timaru. During a visit to the Waikato, Mr Kenny was very favourably impressed with the state of the country and the season’s prospects. Feed for stock was in abundance, and though some hay had been lost as a result of rain, this, owing to the ample crop gathered, will make little difference to farmers.
In Canterbury the grain crops were good, but the weather there had been much drier than in the North, and the conditions had not been favourable to maximum yields. Mr Kenny everywhere found, when discussing prospects with people he met, a healthier tone and a cheerful optimism which was in marked contrast to the spirit prevailing when he visited the south 12 months previously. The scepticism with which the people were wont to regard the oftrepeated assurance that the country was getting “round the corner” had given place to actual confidence. While away on his holiday, the election for the board of directors of the Kaitaia Co-op. Dairy Factory was held, and Mr Kenny, out of 22 candidates, topped the list of the those successful. Though pleased with the confidence shown in him, he declined to make any comment on the significance of the election results.
