PIPIWAI CUT OFF

Residents of the Moengawahine and Pipiwai districts living above where the bridge was damaged, are concerned as to how they will establish communication with Whangarei, especially for the forwarding of their cream. The trouble at the bridge, hitherto unaffected by flooding, was caused by the bank falling • away, and the collapse of the piles. The county chairman, Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay, anticipates that repair work will require about a fortnight. It will be speeded to the utmost extent.

In the meantime they are investigating the possibilities of a deviation through private property, and the fording of the river, when it recedes to a sufficiently low level. Otherwise a trek over the hills to Mangakahia and thence to Whangarei, lengthening the distance to Whangarei by over 20 miles, is the only alternative.

Tapper Bros.’ garage, all Pipiwai, was blown down by the storm, the wreckage falling upon a fleet of trucks, which were removed with the greatest difficulty.
