TWENTY NEGROES BURNED

PETROL FIRE TRAGEDY (Received 10 a,m.) NEW YORK, February I. A message from Scottsbord, Alabama, states that a tragedy involving the accidental burning to death of 20 negroes occurred there today. Twenty-two negro prisoners were being transported on a motor-lorry in a cage used for the transfer of prisonbers from a prison road camp stonecrushing pits. A drum of petrol was being carried also.

The petrol splashed over as the lorry lit an icy portion of the road. The prisoners were bending over a bundle of burning paper, which one of their number had ignited, in order to warm their hands, when the stream of petrol washed over the flame.

The interior of the cage immediately became a roaring furnace. The guards succeeded in pulling negroes out, but they were so badly injured that they are not expected to live.
