WELL OVER POOR FIGURES

WHANGAREI COUNTY’S REPAIR BILL

A repair bill running well over four figures will face the Whangarei County Council as a result of flood damage.

A few chains from the camping ground at Tamaterau a whole hillside disgorged across the road and into the sea, forming a new point in the Whangarei Harbour, where previously bare rocks had hemmed the water. The slip is one and a-half chains long, and covers the road to a depth of six feet.

f It will be necessary to make a block cutting, and the county engineer, Mr J. Norris, anticipates that four days will elapse before traffic can get through. Where They Turn Back. Holgate’s corner, where the first of a succession of slips has come down, is the turning point for travellers on the Whangarei-Kiripaka Road. Between Kiripaka and Ngunguru, the road is studded with landfalls, and will be blocked for at least three days. Horsemen cannot negotiate the road leading from Tutukaka to Ngunguru. Between Woolley’s Bay and Sandy Bay, Matapouri, spoil effectively blocks all communication on the coastal road.

The Russell Road, at Helena Bay, is just a succession of • debris piles.

With all communication cut off, little advice has been received from the Mangakahia. It is known, however, that a huge slip has fallen across Ruddell’s Flat, and that another is down just above the twin bridges in the Gorge.
