BAKERS’ PICNIC

A VARIED PROGRAMME IN THE SUN The third annual combined picnic of the Whangarei and 'Hikurangi bakers, held at Sandy Bay, Matapouri, ‘on Sunday, proved even more successful than its predecessors. Two busloads were carried from Whangarei and a number of private cars joined the party, making the total attendance over 150.

Further down the coast a cold wind made conditions rather unpleasant, but Matapouri was well sheltered, and towards the close of the day complexions in many instances had a summer’s tale to tell.

Except for crockery and sandwiches, everything was provided, and generously so. Every child received a present of some kind, and the distribution of ice creams and lollies were most popular. Interest reached its peak in the tug-o’-war events. Before lunch, the hefty team from Whangarei Bakeries dealt with the challenge of the combined representatives from Bates’ Bakery and Hikurangi, in quick style. Later in the day, however, they met their Waterloo, and after a quarter of an hour of hand-skinning, were unexpectedly beaten in the final by Wilkinson’s team. THE RESULTS.
