AUCKLAND WOOL SALE

“An erratic sale” describes the second Auckland wool sale held today. The offering of 28,000 bales was a heavy one for Auckland. The average returns were not notably different from last November, whereas growers were buoyed up by recent New Zealand sales and anticipated a substantial improvement. Coarse sold on a par with November, while medium and fine were cheaper. Forty-§ixes to 48’s were about id easier, and 50’s and better were about 3d lower. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Ltd. offered the first lot. Five bales of crossbreds, Waiotira, sold at 73d. Buyers continued to bid keenly, but were obviously tied down to close limits. The top price, so far, is 163 d for a line of halfbreds from Chamberlain’s farm at Ponui Island. The Auckland clip opened up in good condition, but a large percentage of lots was insufficiently skirted. Consequently, bidding was limited. Comparing prices with the last Dominion offering, values for finer wools were from par to Id dearer. Coarse qualities and culls equalled late rates. Bellies and pieces were eagerly competed for, these being secured by Continental buyers. Lambs’ wool, of which there was a medium interest, brought keen competition from Bradford, the Continent and Australia, realising up to late ■ rates. A limited quantity of halfbreds went to Continental and Australian and local mills. The Continental buyers were the keenest, Bradford operating within strictly defined limits. The Whangarei branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd. report prices obtained at the

STRONG OPENING AT LONDON (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, January 19. The strong opening at the London wool sales confirmed expectations. An encouraging feature was the general widespread competition. The demand for crossbreds was significant, and indicates that some of the finer grades purchased provide a certain amount of substitution for merinos. Topmakers are finding a difficulty in passing on the advances to spinners’ manufacturers, declaring (that consumers won’t stand the rise. They point out that last year’s tremendous wool consumption was built up on a considerably lower price level.
