LORRY OVERTURNS
SIX MAORIS THROWN OUT AND INJURED [Special to "Northern Advocate.”'] WHAKATANE. This Day. When a motor lorry on which they were riding overturned near Taneatua at 5.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, six Maoris were injured. Those injured were: — Matatua Taipeti. fractured spine, condition critical. Peter Te Niate, serious injuries to a leg and arm, condition fair. Jack Takarua, injuries to the collarbone. T. Kingi. bad cuts to the head and body. W. Hore Hohua. severe cuts to the face and scalp. T. Takarua, severe shock. All except the last-named were taken to the Whakatane Hospital, but only Taipeti and Te Niate were admitted. The Maoris were returning to Ruatoki from Taneatua. The truck, which was loaded with timber and full petrol drums, was driven by Kingi, and it is stated that the accelerator jammed on a corner. The truck completely overturned, landing on its wheels. One of the passengers, Jim Rangihika, had a remarkable escape. He was thrown into a hollow with the timber and drums on top of him, but he was unhurt. Another T. Takarua, was picked up 80 feet from the scene of the mishap.
