THE NEW GOVERNMENT

The composition of New Zealand's first Labour Government has received a chorus of approval which must’ he very gratifying to the Prime Minister, Mr Savage, especially as it is reported that the members of his party Avere unanimous in their endorsement of his selection of Cabinet Ministers. It is not an easy matter to select a Cabinet under the most favourable circumstances, but the task is made more difficult Avhen a great experiment is being launched. Mr SaA T age has

acquitted himself well as Leader! of the Opposition, and now as the framer of the first Labour Cabinet. It is true that he had to choose .men, without experience of Ministerial Avork, but there is no reason, to fear that the men avlio have been selected will not very quickly accommodate themselves to iiie tasks Avith Avhieh they have been entrusted. Inj this respect they take up their tasks better equipped than some Ministers in the past, for, almost Avithont exception, they have been close students of political questions and are men Avith practical experience of life in A'arions callings. They will undoubtedly find that there is a vast difference between-theory and practice in. the administration of Government responsibilities, just as there is in every branch of endeavour, but they may he expected to apply commonsense principles in the solution of problems. The team, is a good one, and there Avill be general hope that its work Avill benefit Dofninioh as a Avhole. The Government Avill stand or fall by the Avork it does ?< and it may be sure that, Avhile it sets out Avith the congratulations and good Avisbes of everybody, it Avill be the cynosure of critical, if friendly, eyes.
