SPLENDID RESULT

PRIME MINISTER’S VIEW LABOUR DISAPPOINTED LLOYD GEORGE UNDISMAYED. IBritish Official Wireless ,] (Received 1 p.m.) RUGBY, November 15The Prime Minister,. Mr Stanley Baldwin, in a message to the nation issued tonight said: “It is a splendid result. The country has renewed its support of the National Government. It has expressed decisively its con-, fldence in*our will and ability to continue our work of national restoration and world peace. We shall give all that is in us in the years ahead to justify the country’s trust.”

Commenting on the results, the Leader of the Labour Party, Major Attlee, said the result in a number of seats was disappointing, but the aggregate poll showed how great and widespread had been the response to Labour’s policy of socialism and peace. Labour would face the Government in the new Parliament with confidence, knowing that a great part of the | nation was fully in sympathy with its policy. , Opinion Evenly Divided. Opposition comment generally emphasises the widespread increase in the anti-Government, vote especially in London, where Mr Herbert Morrison points out that, in addition to securing 22 seats out of 62, compared with 11 before the dissolution, ,the Labour wote was 759,527 compared with 563,848 at the last election, nearly reaching Labour’s peak votes of 1929, when it was 783,966. Mr Geo. Lansbury claims that the total vote discloses that opinion throughout the country is almost evenly divided. r

Mr Lloyd George says that although Independent Liberals number only four, chiefly his family, there is no reason for dismay. The Government in 1931 ' had a majority of 7,500,000 votes. “I would not be surprised if four . fifths have disappeared, that means that the winter is over and the huge snowdrift is melting and spring .arriving.”

The Council of Actioh announces that 64 candidates accepting its questionnaire were elected. They include 10 Conservatives, 33 Labour, and 19 Liberal members.

Mr J. R. Clyries says: “Mr Ramsay MacDonald’s devastating defeat will evoke complete Labour satisfaction* and will not arouse real lamentation anywhere.” ,
