N.S.W. TENNIS TITLES

QUIST DOWNS CRAWFORD MISS NICHOLLS BEATEN. (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 15. A high, gusty wind made play very difficult in the New South Wales tennis today. The results included the following:—

Quist defeated Crawford, 4 —6, 6 —4, 6 —4, 11—9; Hopman defeated Tonkin, 4—6, 6—4, 6—4, 10—8. Women’s singles (semi-final): Miss Hartigan defeated Miss „ Nicholls .(N.Z.), 6—3, 6—3; Miss Coyne defeated Mrs Hopman, 4—6, 6—4, 6—4. Mixed doubles (second round): Lindo and Mrs Betts defeated Donohoe and Miss Nicholls, 6 —3, 2—l (retired). Tn the men’s doubles semi-finals Crawford and McGrath defeated Ferguson and Chrystal, 6—3, B—6, 9—7; Quist and Thompson defeated Hopman and Kay, 11—9, 7—5, 7—5. Miss Nicholls started well against Miss Hartigan, champion of Australia and New Zealand, and led 3 —l before Miss Hartigan got her famous forehand working smoothly. Miss Hartigan won five games in succession to win the set. Miss Nicholls could not gauge the pace of her opponent’s shots in the second and “outed” her returns.

The New Zealander did not play confidently enough to test Miss Hartigan’s back hand. The Australian’s forehand drives repeatedly found the sideline, with Miss Nicholls out of position. Donohue developed a bad cramp in the mixed doubles, and' forfeited the match. Quist proved steadier than Crawford in the singles championship. Quist took the net and forced Crawford into errors.
