A MISSING CHILD

It has been truly said that a touch of nature makes the whole world kin. On Sunday afternoon last, a little girl, only two years old, suddenly and mysteriously disappeared when, playing with other little ones of her own age. When the alarm Avas' sounded there was an immediate assemblage of searchers from neighbouring farms and from all parts of a wide district. The number increased as news that a little one was missing gained circulation. As a consequence, the pjast week has witnessed a touching demonstration of practical sympathy and loving kindness. Searchers have toiled without ceasing, covering a large area of swamp and rough country, and probing every nook and corner that might possibly reveal the object of the search. So far. all efforts have been in vain, and the fate of the child remains a mystery. The heart of every parent has been stirred by the tragedy, for fathers and mothers realise what their own reaction would be to such a happening if one of their own 'children disappeared under similar circumstances. It is a further tribute to the bigness and tenderness of heart of the people of this district that a massed search is planned for tomorrow. If the child has lost her life, the sorrow of the parents at an irreparable loss would have its poignancy softened by the recovery of the little body. Every parent knows that this is a plain statement of fact, and we therefore hope that the appeal which has been addressed to old and young to take part, in a comprehensive search will be crowned with success.
