Otago Rain. Steady warm rain commenced to fall in North Otago yesterday afternoon. Light rain is still falling, and is general in country areas, where it will be much appreciated after the dry spell. Some districts report about 76 points of rain so far. Although the dry weather has been experienced for some time it has not been very exceptional. Autumn sown crops, comprising the bulk of the sowings, are looking very well, and stock, particularly lambs, is,in splendid condition. The present rain makes the prospects of the farming community very bright. Reliability Run. The Auckland Motor Cycle Club is holding a reliability run from Auckland to Whangarei at the week-end. The full course will be well oyer 200 miles and will not follow main highways only. The competitors will take the road via. the Waipu Cove, where there are some bridges down, which will necessitate deviations arid care. After reaching Whangarei, the cyclists will travel to Dargaville and return home through Ruawai. A start will be made from Auckland at about 7 a.m. on Sunday. Mr D. Garton has been asked to check the competitors at Waipu Cove. School Boys’ Lead.

A praiseworthy spirit of willingness to help the worthy cause of the Health Stamp campaign has been shown by the boys of a Wellington school. During the lunch hour, a number of older boys approached the headmaster saying they would like to take an active part in the cam* paign. As a result they are plotting on November 5, not to burn and blow up all the proceeds of their Guy Fawkes collection, but to donate half the money they obtain to the purchase of stamps, so that ultimately some children might benefit from the »facilities provided at a health camp.

Kamo Cricket Club. The marked revival of the cricket firmament in Whangarei and district, started last year and continued for this season, included in its category Kamo. A club was soundly constituted, and, with a junior eleven, a good impression was created. Inducements to players are always welcome and two enthusiasts have donated trophies which should serve well. Mr W. Markwick has presented a shield to the club for the best all-rounder of the season, the trophy to be retained by the winner for 12 months. A bat is awaiting the member who records the best run-getting average in the competitions. Mr Bindon, Senr., was the donor. Distinguished Record Claimed. An unusual history of war service and' adventure was claimed by Gilbert Eldred, aged 58, who appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court at Christchurch on two charges of indecent assault on a girl. Prisoner claimed to have been in the retreat from Mons and the Battle of the Somme, as well as having been a member of one of Shackleton’s expeditions and Byrd’s first Antarctic expedition. Mr Justice Northcroft said there did not seem to be satisfactory proof of the record, and ordered reformative detention for three years. His Honour recommended that prisoner’s mental state be investigated. Combined Band Concert, Further arrangements designed to make Band Sunday a memorable musical event in Whangarei have been completed. For the evening concert, when the senior and junior organisations will provide a joint programme, the band numbers will be varied with a number of high-class supporting items. The vocalists will be Miss U. Hirtzel and Messrs Jones and W. j Mclvor. A euphonium solo with band accompaniment will be rendered by Bandsman A. Salmon. Junior band soloists, who will have piano accompaniment, will be S. Foot (cornet), G. Carrington (tenor horn), T. Dobson (euphonium) and S. Dobson (E flat bass). There will also be a cornet duet by Bandsmen Peachey and Carrington. Henry Wilson’s showing of new season’s printed cambrics, etc., is unique, and comprises all the very latest designs in “Bobby” prints. 1/2.} yard; “Barbara” cambrics, 1/3 yard; and “Dormatex” imitation linens, 1/8} yard. When Denis Ronald Bisset, aged 23, picked up a wrestlet watch in a picture theatre he gave it to a young woman, instead of handing it over to the theatre attendant. As the result he was convicted ,of the theft of the watch at the Police Court in Auckland and placed on probation for two years. Cruising Club. A meeting of the committee of the Whangarei Cruising Club was held last night. It was decided to keep a sailing register for the purpose of handicapping and record. A long report was received from the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association in regard to a proposed ocean race to be promoted by the Brisbane Club, up the Queensland coast.
