“MAD FOLLY"

BREAKING OF PEACE COMMONS SANCTIONS DISCUSSION N ALL HOPE FOR SETTLEMENT. IBritish Official Wireless.l (Received 10 a.m.) RUGBY, October 22. After Sir Samuel Hoare’s speech in the House of Commons dh the international situation, the Leader of the Labour Party, Major C. R. Attlee, said the first thing one felt in discussing the present situation was amazement at the mad folly which had broken the peace, and was endangering the whole world.

They were not concerned, at the moment, with the conditions of government in Abyssinia or in Italy, The over-mastering matter was the vindication of the rule of law against the rule of force and the protection of the international system against a relapse into anarchy. Sir Herbert Samuel, Liberal Leader, said that although all agreed that Britain should be actuated by no feeling of hostility to Italy, they all joined Sir Samuel Hoare in hoping for an honourable settlement, but it must be honourable to all the. parties to the dispute, including the League. He urged a constructive, peace policy.

Mr J. McGovern (Labour— Shettleston, Glasgow) said it Would be more intelligent for the Italian worker* to use machine guns against Signor Mussolini and the Italian ruling class, than against poor natives in Africa.

Mr P. R. Grenfell (Labour —Gower, Glamorgan) condemned the League for “doing too little.” He asked how long Egypt would stay British if Signor Mussolini was successful in Abyssinia, or how long it would be before Signor Mussolini got a foothold on the Arabian Peninsula, where oil could be exploited. The debate was then adjourned until tomorrow. • » '
