BRILLIANT PALFRESCO

An Australian and New Zealand record of- 2.272- for a mile and a half was established by the three-year-old, Palfresco, in winning the Caulfield Cup at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting, which was- concluded at Caulfield on Saturday in fine weather, and before an enormous attendance. Palfresco made a remarkable effort. He was on the extreme outside of 24 at the harrier, and was in front of only five horses a mile from home. He moved up from the six furlongs post and took charge below the distance. Palfresco was bred by Mr S. Green, and is held on lease by Mr S. Kent. He showed moderate form early this season, but commanded support during the week, following brilliant track work. His sire. Son o’ Mine, was imported from -England, and was third in the Melbourne Cup in 1927. Hot Shot finished gamely for second, and Marabou recorded a good effort. Marabou did not have the best of luck in running. Charles Fox failed to stay. Sarcherie was a close fourth.- Journal and Feldspar went good races. Panto and Oro were disappointing. Allunga was withdrawn at 1.5 p.m. Chapter of Accidents. The Wyuna Steeplechase was a chapter of accidents} seven of the fifteen starters failing to complete the course. The veteran, Wirrate, led throughout. He is owned and trained by the ex-New Zealander, Vin. O’Neill, who won the Melbourne Cuj» with Spearfelt in 1926. The Zealander, Gay Circle, owned by Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, led for the last seven furlongs of the Burwood Handicap, winning by half a neck in an interesting finish. Link Divine was a solidly supported favourite, but she tired and missed a place. Although hampered by Genoa running in toward her at the finish. Fidelity scored a brilliant win in the Mona Nursery. She is owned by Sir Colin Stephen, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, and this was her first start. Comfortable Win.

Arabian Knight led always to gain a comfortable win in the Gwyn Nprsery from Royal Jubilee and Borneo, who finished strongly. The winner is a full brother to Carnarvon, and cost. 300 guineas as a yearling. Dark Sky finished with a brilliant run narrowly to win the Windsor Handicap, in which Red Manfred, havr ing his . first dn' Australia, and Araunah were the last two home.. Red Manfred looks big, arid should do better later. ,

E. Meredith received a, broken collarbone as a result of his fall from Prince Comedy in the Wyuna Steeplechase. The other riders to have falls in the race escaped injury. \ Results:—

Feldspar led at the home turn, but Palfresco, who had moved up fast at the half-mile, took charge in the straight to win by a length and a half from Hot Shot, with Marabou another length away third. Sarcherie was fourth, followed by Journal, Feldspar, Charles Fqx, Spartan and Hostile, with Lord Carrington last. an Australian and New Zealand record. CITY TATTERSALL’S TO NARBETHONG LIMOUX TAKES CLUB WELTER. (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 20. The City Tattersall’s Club held its spring meeting at Randwick yesterday in fine weather, and before a large attendance. The Auckland-owned gelding, Silver Jubilee, finished third to Wind Bird, owned and trained by P. Riddle, and The Marne in the Flying Handicap. King Musk, now raced by T. Jamieson, was second in the Club Welter Handicap. Palady was second in the Novice Handicap. Omarere was unplaced in the Two-Year-Old Stakes, and Country Party in the Three and Four-Year-Old Handicap.
