U.S. 'QUAKE
TWO DEATHS RESULT LARGE NUMBER INJURED HEAVY DAMAGE DONE. C United Press Asscciation.-By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright.l (Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 19. A MESSAGE from Helena, Montana, states that an earthquake, accomaknied by rumblings, violently rocked the town at 9.47 p.m. Several fires aave broken out.
Two people were killed, 43 were injured, so as to require medical attention, and several hundred were slightly injured.
The damage is estimated at between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 dollars (£400,000 to £600,000 at par). A number of buildings collapsed, and 200 houses were rendered unsafe for habitation. Falling bricks and the fronts of shops toppling into streets sent panic stricken residents running to the open. Series of Shocks.
.Members of the National Guard have been mobilised to help fight the fires, to preserve order and prevent looting. The major shock was the 60th of a series of lesser/ shocks, which began six days ago. Slight tremors continued to be felt at irregular intervals. Geological experts say they believe the disturbances occurred along an earth “fracture,” probably from 1 to 5 miles, underground. The shocks were felt in surrounding states, and in parts ; of Canada.
