ORURU BIRTHDAY
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Oruru-Peria Institute celebrated the fourth anniversary pf its birthday with a family night dance in Hayden’s Hall on Thursday evening. The decorations were carried out with nikau palms and looped streamers of red, green and yellow, the Institute colours, with clusters of balloons of the same tints, while at the back of the stage the Institute badge was adorned on a wide band of red. There was an exceptionally large patronage, the floor space being so taxed that difficulty . was experienced in successfully coping with the arrangements throughout the evening. Christensen’s orchestra was in attendance, and extras were played by Mrs Smith, Miss Kelly and Messrs. John and Evan Carton. Mr W. Thomas was M.C. The spot waltz was won by Mr Colin Forsyth and Miss B. Lambly. During the’ evening a playette entitled “Another Pair f)f Spectacles,” performed by Mrs P. Francis, Miss I. Gardiner, and Miss J. Trigg, was well received. The birthday cake was the gift of Mrs Graves, of Kohumaru, and was iced and decorated by Mrs Hancox and Miss P. Barriball. A silver vase containing a sprig of kowhai flowers, the Institute emblem, was the centre ornamentation of this dainty confection. The ceremony of lighting the candles was performed by Mrs F. Jacentho, patron, and Mrs Frances, senr., extinguished them, amidst applause. The honour of cutting the cake was shared by representatives of the various Institutes present: Mrs Hancox (OrufuPcria), Mrs W. A. S. Wrathall (Mangcnui), Miss Tracey (Te Puhi), and Miss McCullough (Takahue). Supper proved a welcome break in the programme. Mrs Barriball, the president, took the opportunity to extend a hearty welcome to all, and hoped that a very enjoyable time would be spent. She returned thanks for the excellent attendance of the public, and thanked all those responsible in any way for assisting the function to such a successful conclusion.
