For goods valued at 100 British pounds a Bank pays the New Zealand producer 1 24 New Zealand pounds. The British pounds received by the Bank are available for sale to importers who require them to pay-for imports from Britain. The New Zealand importer pays 124£ New Zealand pounds for 100 British pounds. Thus, on a telegraphic transfer basis, the Bank’s gross profit on the buying and selling transaction is 10/- in New Zealand currency, against which must be charged salaries and office expenses.
