Arama ■ The Ararua Institute held its monthly meeting in the public hall on October 9. Mrs Leaf presided over a,fair attendance. The competition fer the six largest hen eggs, was won by Mrs Stratford, Mrs Leaf being the winner for the best date loaf. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames D. Richardson, Stensness, Still and Logan. Hikurangi A group meeting of the Hikurangi centre of the Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall on October 2. Mrs A. Edwards presided' over a lafg;e meeting, and representatives froth Marua, Kauri, Opuawhanga, Maromaku, and Helena Bay were present. Miniature courts for each Institute made an excellent display; and the prize, a president’s bell,, was won by the. kjar.ua.. Institute, • Mrs Brown, president of the Federation,, and Mrs. Cook were judges. Mrs Brown gave a helpful-address. The trading stall . and lucky packet stall did brisk business. An excellent programme of music and drama was presented by the following Institutes;—Opuawhanga, vocal duet; Maromaku, vocal quartette; Ma-' rua, short-comedy; Hikurangi, comic sketch. .. • j Taipuha A pleasant afternoon was held, on October ; 2 at the residence of Mrs Finlayson during the monthly meeting 1 of the Taipuha Institute, The meeting } opened with the Institute song, “Com- 1 rades and Friends,” The president, Mrs Florance, welcomed several visitors, ajid. there was a fair attendance of members;; Various topics were introduced in the rolh call; “An interesting press cutting,” There was no competition, but brisk business was done at the bring and buy table, under the ' charge of the treasurer, Mrs McCarroll. A demonstration pn icing a cake was much enjoyed and closely followed by those present,’the demonstrator- . being Miss Jenkins (Paparoa). Two delegates, Mesdames Finlayson and Fraser, were appointed to. attend the half yearly District Federation meet- ' ing in Whangarei. The meeting was much enlivened by community singing, solos by Mesdames Statham and Corner, and a' pianoforte ' duc-t by Mesdames McCarroll and Florance. Afternoon tea followed.

Kaiwaka The monthly meeting of the Kai- ' waka Institute was held in the Public Hall on October 2. Mrs McLean pre- ’ sided over a fair attendance of members, and several visitors were also present. Mrs A. McLean gave an interesting and instructive demonstration of bandaging. Arrangements were made for the celebration of tne third birthday of the Institute in November. In the competition for puff pastry, Mrs Wallace Leslie came first and Mrs Hal! second. All the entries were of a high standard. ’ Great amusement was caused by the opening of surprise packets, and 12/6 was raised towards the funds by each member contributing a packet and donating 3d. The hostesses were Mrs L, Mills and : Miss M. Bowmar. Northland Federation A meeting of the Executive Commit- : tee of the Northland Federation of Women’s Institutes was held in Fosj ter’s rooms, Awanui, on October 9. | The president, Mrs Barriball, occupied I the chair. The secretary’s resignation, 1 On account of ill-health, was. acceptj ed with regret, and a vote of thanks '.was passed. The treasurer, Mrs Lupton, was elected to fill the vacancy. It' was decided that the Federation should work for the establishment of a school dental clinic for its district. .' Miss Smedley, district nurse, gave much valuable information on the subject. The secretary was asked, in conjunction with Miss Smedley, to obtain further data, and it was hoped to be able to give some definite information at the forthcoming biennial conference, which will be held at Peria in November. The competition will be for thrift tables. Each Institute may exhibit 12 articles, made of waste material, including raw wool. There will be two sections, Native and European, in order that the Native Instl- ' tutes may exhibit flax mats and any other Native work. They will ,be judged separately and a trophy given for each. A > varied programme of amusement has been arranged for the day. : ' ■ Rawene >. , The Rawene'Women’s Institute held its usual meeting. last Monday night, but owing to boisterous weather, there was only a fair attendance. Mrs Lpftus gave a demonstration of scrimweaving, which was followed Jay a humorous competition which kept the members amused for some considerable time. Supper, at the home of Mrs Loftus brought the meeting to a close. - ■ ' , Takahiwai The roll call at the Takahiwai Institute meeting was “Something from the bush or garden,” and it-brought forth pictures and cards made with pressed leaves. The , competition for something useful for the home saw displays of plaited rag floor mats and a crochet mat from old silk stockings, a flax mat and a flour scoop made from a cocoa tin. There was a demonstration of knitting diagonally worked squares for quilts, and some ladies unravelled a flax body mat to examine the stitch used. A special meeting was called later by Mrs Miller for the tendering of her and Miss Miller’s resignations from the positions Of president and secretary, on account of their leaving the district. On behalf of the members, . Mrs Chetham made a presentation as a token of remembrance. Mrs Ngawaka Pirihi was made president-secre-tary until the end of the year.

The monthly meeting of the Marohemo Institute was held in the Marohemo Hall on October 3. A reading by Mrs Heatley on “Humour at the Organ Stool” was enjoyed by ail. The written competition was won by Mrs Heatley. Miss Trewin and Miss Trinnear tying for second place. The best dressed clothes peg, dressed out of paper, was wen by Miss P. Hellier, Mrs Morgan coming second. The arts and crafts competition was won by Miss V..Hellier, Mrs Goulsbro coming second. The stamp collecting competition was won by Miss V. Hellier, with 2370 stamps, Mrs Fergus coming second with 2228 stamps. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs J. Jackman, Mrs F. Trewin and Miss V. Hellier. i

At a meeting held at Mbtukaraka, it was decided to form a branch of the. Women’s Institute. The voluntary organiser for the Whangarei Federation, Mr H, C. Harris, was present, and addressed the gathering, outlining the aims and objects of the movement. The following officers were elected:—r President, Mrs R. dearie: secretary, Mrs Dunning; committee, Mesdames Nash, Baker, Boreham, and Knightly.

The Pukepoto Native Women’s Institute held its October meeting in the school rooms on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Dane, who was elected, and accepted the position of president, presided over a fair attendance of members. Some interesting and useful articles made by the pupils were displayed during the afternoon. The competition for a summer frock made from a flourbag was won by Misses Ellen Cameron 1, May Robson 2, and Mary Rogers 3. The best plate ’of buns was won by Mesdames S. Peter 1, T, Robson 2, and Miss M. Rogers 3. , '

The monthly meeting of the Te Puhi Institute was held in the hall on Wednesday, 9th inst., Mrs Tracey presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors. Mrs A, White and Miss J. Peterson tied for first place in a competition, “Nursery Rhymes.” The competition was won by Master F, Trigg. The winners of the competitions for the month were:— * Seniors.—Loaf of white bread, Mesdames A. Tracey and A. Edwards; 1 cluster of flowers, Miss Wallace 1, Mrs A. White 2; single ■ bloom, Mesdames A, Edwards 1, R. Edwards 2. Juniors.—Decorated coat hanger’, J. Peterson 1, B. Trigg 2; handkerchief, J. Peterson 1, P. Buckingham 2; cluster of flowers, P. Buckingham 1, B. Trigg 2; single bloom, R. Panther 2. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable meeting to a close.

Te Tio

Titoki

The September meeting of the Te Tio Institute was: held at Mrs Carman’s residence, Mrs Harris presiding. Mrs Harris gave a short report on the recent group meeting at Okaihau. The banner won by Te Tio was on view. As the date of the meeting coincided with the president’s birthday, Mrs Harris was asked to accept a birthday cake and a small posy. The competition for a plate of biscuits was won by Mrs Carman and Mrs Rodgers second. The roll call was the uses of onions.

The Titokl Institute’s October meeting, held on the first Thursday, was presided over by Mrs Jack. Several members from Kara Institute were present, one of whom demonstrated the making of baskets from pineneedles. The Kara ladies also acted as judges for the competition, “Designs for # a Titoki Institute banner.” First and second prizes went to the designs submitted by Mesdames Pearson and Carruth respectively. The adoption of a banner is being held over till a later date. Mesdames Alexander and F. Fraser were appointed delegates to the Whangarei Federation meeting. A bring-and-buy stall was held in aid of Institute funds. The hostesses were Mesdames Peppered, Brake and Miss R. Alexander. Whangarei Centre The fourth birthday of the Whangarei Centre was celebrated on October 10 by a social evening held in the Friendly Societies’ Hall. Mrs Hirteell presided over the entertainment,. Community singing. competitions and novelty dances were the order of the evening. A short programme presented included items by the “Singing Circle;” songs, by Mrs T. C. Wilson and Mrs C. Clark; and monologues by Mrs Jamieson. The accompanists for the songs and dancing were Mrs Baylis, Mrs Clark and Mr K. Ward. After supper the birthday cake, made and decorated by Mrs Jamieson, was cut. In a happy little speech Mrs Jamieson wished the Instituteprosperity for the forthcoming year. Competitions were won by Mesdames K. Ward and Wilson.

MAROMAKU CELEBRATION. The Maromaku Institute celebrated their third birthday on October 12 at an afternoon party in the schoolroom, which was fittingly decorated for the occasion. Favoured with a sunny day, a number of guests attended from the Hukerenui, Towai and Kawakawa Womens Division branches, and the Moerewa Institute. A programme as follows was presented to an appreciative audience:—“Juanita,” five Institute members; monologue, Miss Edna Woodcock; play, “Feed the Brute, Mesdames D. Ross and Woodcock, and Miss N. Ross; comic song in costume, Mesdames Atkins senr. and J. S. Clark; song, “Play, to Mo, Gipsy,” Mrs Woodcock. A juvenile performer, Peter Henderson, delighted the audience with two recitations.. A cake competition, arranged by Mrs Webb, was Avon by Mrs Rouse, of Hukerenui, and that of tearing the president’s profile from newspaper, by Mrs Kelly, of Moerewa. Afternoon tea was served, the chief feature being the birthday cake, a triumph of culinary art, made and donated by Mrs Woodcock, and iced by Mrs Hay. The president, Mrs J. Atkins junr., welcomed the guests and lit the three candles, which were capably extinguished by Miss Dulcie Webb. The visitors conveyed greetings and thanks from sister organisations.
