“REALLY A TRAGEDY”
N.Z. INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH A DISTINGUISHED VISITOR. SIR GEORGE JULIUS HERE. [Special to “Northern Advocate.”! .AUCKLAND, This Day. Sir George Julius arrived at Auckland by the Mariposa this day. He is visiting his father, Archbishop Julius, of Christchurch, and also for the purpose of interviewing the Prime Minister of New Zealand with a view to closer co-operation between the Dominion and Australia in connection with scientific and industrial research work. Sir George is chairman of the Commonwealth Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and has been so since its foundation ten years ago. Sir George said that the council was now firmly established. This year’s expenditure would be £170,000, of this £120,000: being contributed by the Commonwealth authorities, and the remainder by interested parties. Research into animal diseases and primary production generally was a subject which should also interest New Zealand. “Your Department of Scientific and Industrial Research does not appear to be given much to spend, and it is really, a tragedy,” said Sir George. "I hope that, as a result of my visit, closer co-operation will exist between the two countries.”
