WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM

NEW ZEALANDERS ON TOUR

DEFEAT OF NEW SOUTH WALES,

(Received 9 a.m.)

SYDNEY, July 21

Although the New Zealand women’s hockey team was two goals down in the first five minutes, it convincingly defeated New South Wales yesterday by three goals to two, enhancing its prospects for the All-Australian carnival in Melbourne. \ In her splendid defence Miss G. Mortimer was outstanding. Miss E. Hansen, at centre-half, was the chief agent in upsetting the first attack of the home forwards. Mrs H. Reid, the captain, was always cool. The New Zealanders regarded the ground as perfect, though they confessed they are accustomed to more bounce. They quickly mastered the necessity for driving stickwork without losing faculty for short passing. A feature was their skilful stoppage of the ball on the full, and they were generally superior in positional play. Miss M. McKenzie, inner right, was easily the best ’ forward, neat, thrustful and fast. Miss M. Cotter, left wing, was again reliable, though she was closely watched by Miss Tory Wicks, the New South Wales captain. Miss McKenzie scored all three goals for the New Zealand team, which comprised:— Mrs A. O’Connor (goal), Miss A. McDonald, Miss G. Mortimer, Miss M. Gudsell, Miss E. Hansen, Miss A. Mackie, Mrs J. Donald, Miss M. McKenzie, Mrs H. ‘Reid, Miss I. Dahlberg and Miss M. Cotter.
