The annual general meeting of the Whangarei Bowling Club was held last evening. Mr J. T. Evans presided over a large attendance of members. Report and Balance-sheet. The president’s annual report and the balance-sheet were read and adopted. The balance-sheet revealed that the club’s finances were in a_ healthy position, the surplus for the year’s working being £l2 8/9 after allowing for outstanding accounts amounting to £l6 2/6.

The secretary, Mr Morrish, pointed out that the club was considerably better off at the end of this season than last, as assets haci been increased and an extra sum of money had also been expended on improvements and maintenance. Competitions.”

Mr M. Whitelaw drew attention to the possible effect the change in the statutory half-holiday would have on the club competitions. With Saturday only available for all games, he was of the opinion that the club would have to consider altering the nature of the various club competitions to allow them to be finalised in the limited time at the match committee’s disposal. All competitions would have to be got off, as it wolild not do to sacrifice any of these at the club’s expense. He suggested as a remedy that the fours be reduced from the customary twenty-one heads to fifteen and that the pairs be altered from the four-bowl game to three. This question was widely discussed and on being put 'to the meeting , , i was lost.

It was decided that the pairs be played any time during the week, and only on Saturdays if sufficient rinks were available. Discussion on what system the pairs should be played under then took place, and it was decided that they be conducted on an open declared handicap. »

A notice of motion for discussion at the annual general meeting of the N.A. Centre was then dealt with and was adversely criticised by Mr Morrish. He spoke strongly against the principle of the motion, and his remarks were fully endorsed by all present.

The notice of motion under review reads as follows: —“That the N.A. Centre take over the control of tournaments held at Christmas, New Year, Anniversary Day and Easter. That funds resulting from the profits thereof be divided pro rata on membership basis of all clubs in the Centre entering teams for the tournaments. That clubs of 150 enter seven teams, 100 four teams, under 40 one team, and one team'for every 20 members or fraction thereof.” Mr Morrish said that clubs should strongly object to the effort of the Centre to usurp their rights, and moved that the Whangarei club delegates to the N.A.* Centre be instructed strongly to oppose the proposed motion.

, This course was unanimously approved.. It was moved that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that they take up the question of the revision of the rules.

A hearty vote of thanks to the retiring officials and also to the Press was carried by acclamation.
