POPULAR GIRL CONTEST

MISS RUSSELL THE WINNER. HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL DRIVE. The Popular Girl contest, in aid of the Whangarei Catholic Church Building. Fund, which had been in progress for i the past ; five months, was brought to a most Successful conclusion, bn Saturday night, when the Vinery Lane Hall was crowded to the door by supporters and friends of the three competitors. Games and competitions kept everybody in a state of excitement until 11.30 when the firial announcement was made. '( Although the winner, Miss Betty Russell, had maintained a lead over the others right from the outset, it was confidently anticipated by her supporters that the “Queen” from the Far North, Miss Eileen Mountain (Produce Stall) would gain first place when the final moneys were , handed in, but the Novelty Stall, headed by Miss M. Collins, 1 proved to/ be too strong, the final figures being: Miss Betty Russell (Novelty Stall), 27,532; Miss Eileen Mountain (Produce Stall), 26,942; Miss Joyce Everett (Sweets Stall), 25,856.

Although the secretary is not yet in a position to give authentic figures, the amount cleared will be something like £ 300. When consideration is given to the times through which the people are passing, this must' be looked upon as a remarkable effort indeed. The way in which non-Catholics threw themselves into the project is the subject of much eulogistic reference by the members of the committee and the local Catholic community in general. While it would be extremely hard to single out anyone for special mention, the magnitude of the work performed by thef stall-holders, Mesdames Spring and Crowley and Miss M. Collins, and those closely associated with them, must not be lost sight of. The tearooms, in charge of Mrs Power, while not taking such a prominent part as the others, did excellent work. The sincerest thanks of the Catholics of Whangarei are tended, to all who helped to make the affair such an outstanding success.
