CHILD DROWNED
ANOTHER SURFING MISHAP [Per Press Association. — Copyright J HAWERA, This Day. Irma Zoa Miles, aged 11, was drowned at Waihi Beach, near Hawera, shortly before 5 p.m. yesterday. The girl went to the beach with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrsf W. Dempsey, of Hawera, and two cousins, both older girls. About the middle of the afternoon the three went for a bathe, a number of others being in the water at the time. There was a set towards the south, and it apparently carried them near the rocks. After most of the other bathers had left the water, calls for help were heard by a picnic party, and Gordon Standish went to the assistance of the girls. None of the girls could swim, but all three appeared to be in difficulties. The two older ones were pluckily trying to save their cousin. Mr. Standish was unable to reach them at first, but two other men, Mr. Greenaway and another, went to assist him. Mr. Greenaway took one of the Dempsey girls to the shore while Mr. Standish took the other. Mr. Greenaway went out again, recovered the body of the small girl and started to revive her. Despite his efforts and those of Drs. T. Fogg and A. M. Young, it was not possible to save the girl’s life. The deceased gifl was the youngest daughter of Mr, and Mrs. L. Miles, of Hawera.
