Eleven thousand Boy Scouts from many nations, preceded by their national flags, in a colourful march-past opened the first Scout Jamboree In the Southern Hemisphere yesterday. It was the most striking demonstration of youth seen here. The memorable ceremony reached its climax when the Governor-General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, read a message from the King. His Majesty expressed the hope that the spMt of brotherhood . among the Scout movement which Spread among youths would continue to unite them as members of the great commonwealth of nations in years to come.
“By keeping this great comradeship,” continued the King, “you will be making a real contribution to the welfare of the Empire and the peace and prosperity of the world.” More than 15,000 people witnessed the march of youth triumphant. It was a never-to-be forgotten parade. His Excellency, in an address, said the Scout movement promoted international understanding, kindly sentiment and peace. “To the architect and master builder of this magnificent and unique structure. Lord BadenPowell, we will give a welcome truly international,” said Sir Isaac Isaacs. Eleven thousand hats were raised on staves and thunderous cheers greeted the Chief Scout as he rose.
“I am not going to speak to you now.” he said. “Three cheers for His Majesty,” The cheers were heartily given. Historic tableaux and pageants followed. The real pageantry of the jamboree will begin next week, when, day by day. the significance of the Scout movement will be, presented.
