CHILDREN ENTERTAINED
BY KAURI INSTITUTE. The Christmas party, organised by the Women’s Institute for the children of Kauri was held last week. There was a very large gathering of parents and friends from the surrounding districts. In return the school children submitted the following entertaining programme. The first item was a complimentary song, “The Women’s Institute.” Then followed “Goodnight,’ ’an action song by two tiny tots in night attire. The remainder of the programme was as follows:—A Christmas acrostic, by nine little girls; recitation, “The End,” Merle Coxhead; hoop dance, girls; playette, “The Mad Teaparty,” from “Alice in Wonderland;” action song and dance, “The River,” girls and boys; recitation, “Shoe-villa,” Merle Coxhead; part song, “Gaily Blows the South Wind;” one-act play, “The Conceited Pirate,” in which all the children took part. This was very well acted and great praise is due to their teacher, Miss Torr, for the manner in which she ‘had trained the children, and also to her sister, Miss Olive Torr, who acted as accompanist. During the intervals between the children’s items, songs were given by Mrs Simpson and Mr Ray Tilford, and Mi’s Griffen gave two humorous recitations.
As a finale, Mrs Griffen presented her ever-popular “Punch and Judy” show. The hall was then cleared and the children marched round the Christmas tree, while a very realistic Santa Claus put in an appearance, and, with the assistance of Mrs Graham, president of the institute, presented each child with a present. Supper was then served and the adults took the floor. Several competition dances were held.
During the evening Mr Bell, chairman of the school committee, presented the prizes to the winners of the Calf Club competition. Miss Torr was the recipient of a bouquet from the children.
