OBITUARY

MR. C. K. WILSON The death took place at Te Kuiti on Monday of Mr. Charles Kendall Wilson, one of the best-known residents of the King Country. Mr. Wilson was born in Sydney, and came to New Zealand at the age of 16 with his parents. He was an auctioneer at Horowhenua for Messrs. Abi’aham and Williams, and came to the King Country in 1910, when he engaged in farming in the Piopio district. He represented the Waitomo electorate from 1911 to 1914. and was a member of the -Meat Board from 1923 till 1931. He was a member of the Waitomo County Council for over 20 years. MR. J, GREGORY HUNT The death has occurred of Mr. James Gregory Hunt, aged 62. formerly a well-known settler in the Chathams. and lately a resident of Sumner and director of the Westland Shipping Company, which owns the steamer Tees. He was educated in the Waikato. MR. HUGH FRASER A pioneer in the Pohangina over half a century ago, Mr. Hugh Fraser, was buried on November 19 at Parewanui. He was well and active to within two days of his death, at the age of 91 years, when he had a fall. At the age of 20 Mr. Fraser had an adventure with the Maoris on the Coromandel Peninsula, where he and his companion were prospecting for gold. Only their knowledge of the Maori language, acquired in old Rangitikei, saved them from impending death. Mrs. Fraser died 12 years ago. She went with her husband to the bushclad valley of Pohangina, when the only road access was the bed of the river, which entailed no less than 16 crossings. Some idea of the difficulties of transport may be gained from the fact that when Mr. Fraser was carting his furniture and household goods to the new homestead the waggon was marooned in midstream during a flood, which carried the whole of his clothing and effects away beyond recovery. MR. F. W. BROWNING Formerly a farmer in the Waikato, Mr. Francis Wise Browning died at Clorane, County Limerick. Ireland. About 40 years ago Mr. Browning took up land to farm in the Tauwhare district. He left New Zealand nearly 30 years ago to live on his estate in Ireland, but since then paid several visits to the Dominion. He is survived by two children. Mr. F. Browning, and Mrs. E. F. Peacocke, of Leston Lea, Hamilton. j
