GROUP TRAFFIC INSPECTOR
PAYMENT OF EXPENSES. INCREASE SOUGHT. The group traffic inspector, Mr F. Watters, who is employed jointly by the Main Highways Board and the counties of Hobson, Otamatea and Whangarei, recently applied for an increase in his travelling allowance. The Otamatea Council recommended that the allowance be £3OO in place of £250 as hitherto. The Highways Board has suggested 4d per mile, plus actual and reasonable personal travelling expenses. The Otamatea Council favoured the straight-out payment of a fixed annual sum, as this method definitely fixed the liability and simplified the method of allocation and its subsequent reimbursement. At yesterday’s meeting of the Whangarei County Council the clerk said that the average mileage travelled per month by Mr Watters was 1200, equivalent to £240 per annum.
The question as to whether 4d per mile was adequate was discussed, until a member pointed out that county councillors received 7d per mile travelling expenses. As the recommendation had come from Otamatea, the county most closely associated with the administration of the inspector, the Whangarei Council decided to support the recommended increase to £3OO.
