BRITISH ATHLETES

WHO’S WHO IN TEAM. ; RAMPLING MOST PROMINENT. The cabled announcement from London this week that R. Murdoch (Scotland), G. L. Rampling (England), J. ,V. Powell (England), and R. M. Craske (England) have been selected to leave London on December 8 for Australia, and that there is a possibility of the team visiting New Zealand later, .is pleasing news, provided, of course, that the team comes on to the Dominion. Of those selected, one, R. M. Craske, is not so well known. G. L. Rampling is regarded as one of the. best, quarter-milers Britain has had, though at various periods he has suffered breakdowns in health. He appears,' however, to be in tip-top shape'again. At the British Empire Games in August he won the quarterinile pn a soaked and battered track and on a windy, day in 48sec, beating, the British record of 48 2-ssec and the English, native record of 481 sec. Rampling is v a stylist, and it has been said of him that a mere recital of his times gives no idea of the standard of his running., ,:J. V. Powell ran fourth in the British Empire Games half-mile, won by Phil Edwards (British Guiana) in lmin 54 l-ssec, and R. Murdoch was fifth in the final of the 100 yards at the- Games and fourth in the final of the 220 yards; Powell won his heat in the half-mile in Imin 56 l-ssec, and Murdoch was also first in fast time in his heats of the two sprints—lOsec for the 100 yards and 22 4-ssec for the furlong. A. W. Sweeney (England) won the-finals of both sprints, but apparently he is unavailable.
