The Duke of Gloucester spent this morning in a motor tour of the Dandenong Ranges, picturesque hill country close to Melbourne. Although it was intended as a quiet outing, free from pomp and circumstance or official formality, the Duke could not escape the desire of the hill residents to honour him.

The journey soon invested itself with all the glamour of an official progress. At one stage a party of road workers, on a gaily decorated lorry, enthusiastically waved flags and cheered the passing Royal car. The Duke suitably acknowledged this greeting from the democracy.
