MARKET FOR GHEE

j REFERENCE IN AUCKLAND. I LETTER FROM WHANGAREI. [Special to “Northern Advocate”! AUCKLAND, This Day. The possibilities of a market for ghee butter in India were again mentioned at the meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday, when several letters, including one from the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce, were read. , The president, Mr A. G. Lunn, said the consumption of ghee butter in India was 750,000 tons, and if New Zealand could obtain a market to supply only 2£ per cent of the total consumption, it would mean a tremendous benefit to the New Zealand farmers.

“I think that in our endeavours to to impress upon the Government the necessity for investigating the Indian market, we should emphasise the dire straits the dairy industry in New Zealand is in at present. The Government, I think, is now taking quite a keen interest in the matter.”

Mr W. B. Darlow questioned whether the objective aimed at would bring about the benefit many believed. “We only export sufficient goods to pay for our imports,” said Mr Darlow. “What is the use of sending more goods if it means that we will be importing more? It seems that what we want to do is to export more, but you cannot do that without increasing imports. There is plenty of work to do in New Zealand. There is hardly a bridge in New Zealand that could not be improved.” Mr Lunn: “The position today is that we are facing the serious problem of over-production. It is most important. We are not going to let Britain down if she is short of butter, but I hope to see the farmers getting 1/ a .pound. Then we would see plenty of smiling faces.”

It was decided to send the correspondence to the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
