OPPOSED TO DAIRY BILL

BAY COUNTY’S ATTITUDE. A STRONG PROTEST. “The matter is one of such seriousness that it should be discussed by the council,” said Cr H, T. Bates at the Bay of Islands County Council meeting yesterday when a long communication regarding the Dairy Bill was received from the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. “Don’t you think that the council should protest in some manner against this proposed legislation?” he said. ‘I certainly do. I think that all local bodies should help in this matter by registering a vigorous protest.” The strongest protest would -be too weak, he said. A resolution should be carefully worded and made as strong as possible. Usually, matters like this were let go, and allowed to go through. Cr Bates moved: “That this meeting emphatically protests against the setting up of a supreme council to take charge of the primary industries of the country and demands that a dairy board, consisting of producers only, elected by the producers of the country, be brought into existence with full powers to control the industry and to enforce rules that they consider to be for the good of the industry.” Cr, Smith heartily supported the motion, which was carried, and is to be forwarded to the Prime Minister, Mr Savage and Mr H, M. Rushworth.
