FLEMINGTON CARNIVAL

NIGHTLY WINS FISHER PLATE OAKS TO ALINURA. UPOKO ARIKI SCORES. Wnited Press Association—By. Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.} MELBOURNE, November 8. The weather for the third day of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington today was fine after heavy ram, and there was a moderate attendance. The New Zealand jockey, K. Voitre, created a favourable impression by his handling of the Maiden Plate winner, Worthing. The colt is owned by his breeder,' Mr Sol Green, and won in impressive fashion from Gavin Girl and Barak. Barryanda, dam of Worthing, was bred in Taranaki. Strathardale scored a comfortable win in the Byron Moore Stakes. Golden Promise, who is suffering from shin soreness, did well to secure second place, and another New Zealander, Whernside, was third. The winner is raced by Mr L. K. S. Mackinnon, chairman of the Victorian Racing Club, and has gained two wins and two thirds in four starts.

The New Zealand horse, Nightly, led all the way in the C. B. Fisher Plate, and was not extended to win in 2.53;} for one and a half miles, which is 22i seconds outside the race record. Hall Mai’k could make no impression in the final stages, and Lough Neagh was third. These were the only starters. Villius was prominent all the way in the Carnival Handicap, and beat the fast-finishing New Zealand-bred colt, Bunsby Gaze, Allenby was unlucky, as his rider lost an iron a furlong from home, and then failed to hold off Bunsby Gaze only by a head. The trainer, J. G. Heywood, and Mr F, E. Cobhold, the owner of Villius, were associated with Danilo’s success in the Carnival Handicap last year. Alinura, owned and trained in South Australia, improved on her form in the Wakeful Stakes, in which she ran unplaced, to register a comfortable win in the Oaks Stakes. She won the recent South Australian Derby. Quarto, second, and Daughter of the Wind, third, ran game races, but Queen Helen and Limyris performed below expectation.

The New Zealand-bred Upoko Ariki beat the pace-maker, Burlesque, by a neck in the Veteran Stakes. Gippsland finished fast for third place. Melisandc was never dangerous. Results: —
