Benighted, Crooning, Aubretia, Lady Diana and Laudatory were not saddled up for the Spring Plate, leaving a field of 11, for which Memnon, Aramis and Lap Up were best backed. Orefield was the first to show out from Aramis, and going along the back they were followed by Express, Impel! ant, Memnon, Kilonsoa, Gay Sol, Royal Winton, Acranna, Friar Albertus and Lap Up. Aramis and Orefield were stUl in charge across the top from Express, Acranna, Memnon, Royal Winton, Impellant, Friar Albertus and Kilonsoa. Orefield was the first to turn for home from Aramis, Express, Memnon, Royal Winton and Acranna, and in the run to the judge Express came through to' win by two lengths from Orefield, who" beat Memnon by half a length. Royal Winton' was fourth, followed by Aramis, Kilonsoa, Lap Up, Impellant, Friar Albertus, Gay Sol and Acranna. The winner paid over double figures on the straight-out machine, and Orefield also paid double figures on the place machine, the latter only having £3 invested on him for a win, and £5 for a place.

(Winner trained by T. J. Scott, Turua.) Only five went ,to the post for the Hikurangi Hack Handicap. Miss Lu being made a good favourite on each machine, while Bonny Gay was next fancy. Passing the 'stand, Hawthorn was in charge from Miss' Lu, Bonny Gay, Aubretia and Princess Bede. Aubretia ran to the front along the back, closely followed by Miss Lu, Hawthorn, Bonny Gay, and Princess Bede, Aubretia and Miss Lu were together crossing the top, followed by Hawthorn and Bonny Gay, who were also racing on terms. There was no alteration at the home turn. Once the straight was fairly entered upon, Bonny Gay took charge and appeared to be winning comfortably, but Miss Lu put in a strong challenge, and Bonny Gay had to be shaken up to beat her by a neck. Princess Bede was two lengths and a half away, third, with Hawthorn fourth.

WHANG ARE! RACING CLUB IDEAL WEATHER PREVAILS LARGE CONCOURSE GOOD SPORT PROVIDED Favoured with fine, cool weather conditions and the track in excellent order, the 1934 spring meeting of the Whangarei Racing Club opened at Kensington Park shortly after noon today very auspiciously. There is a large attendance of the public, and an atractive scene is presented in the gay attire of the ladies and the floral bedecked grounds. The Whangarei Municipal Band is adding cheer to the occasion with a programme of choice music, and first-class sport is being provided for the spectators in the generally good fields which are contesting the various events.

Results of the racing up to the time of the “Advocate” going to press are as follow;

Won by two lengths; three-quarters of a length. Time—2;sl 3-5.

(Winner trained by Owner, Greenlane.) Seven went to the post for the Huanui -Hack Hurdles, Archeen,’ Silver Division and Neil finding most support. Neil and Benighted were first to show out, but when they settled down Notamint was just showing the way to Benighted, Neil,’ and Archeen. Auburn Rose fell at the first hurdle. Passing the stand, Neil was in front, followed by Tondaleyo, Archeen, Silver Division, Benighted and Notamint. The order was much the same along the back, but, crossing the top, Archeen had run up to Neil, the pair being followed by Benighted, Silver Division and Tondaleyo. There was no change as they turned for home, but at the last hurdle, Neil slewed, and came over on Archeen. Neil went on to win by two lengths from Archeen, who beat Benighted by three-quarters : of a length. Silver Division was fourth, with Tondaleyo while Notamint was a long way back, his rider having lost a stirrup leather and iron.

(Winner trained by Owner, Kamo.) Alloy was the only defection from the Whangarei Cup race, fn which Lord Val, Monanui, and Desert Star were most in demand. Whakapara and Maori Boy were the-early leaders from Lord Val, Monanui, Gay Broney. Desert Star and Ornamental. Passing the stand Maori Boy was followed by Whakapara, Monanui, Lord Val, Gay Broney, Desert Star and Ornamental. There was no alteration along the back except that Ornamental had tailed off. Lord Val, Monanui and Whakapara were together crossing the top, followed by Maori Boy, Gay Broney, Desert Star and Ornamental. They turned for home in this order, Monanui doing best in the run home, to beat Lord Val by half a length, with Desert Star 2\ lengths away, followed by Whakapara, Gay Broney, Ornamental and Maori Boy.

Along the top, Hoihoma was in charge from Impellant. Tea Chat. Blue Bonnet, Paper Dart and Gay Cockade, They turned for home in that order, and in the run to the post, Impellant finished strongly to cross the line half a head in front of HOihoma, who beat Blue Bonnet by a length and a-half. Olivette was fourth, and was followed by Paper Dart, Gay Cockade, Tea Chat and Royal Potoa.
