BONELESS BEEF AND VEAL

, EXPORT BAN REMOVED. BELATED ANNOUNCEMENT. [From Our Parliamentary Special.] WELLINGTON, This Day. The belated announcement that the prohibition on the export from New Zealand of boneless beef and veal had been inoperative for some time was made by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Macmillan, in the House' of Representatives, in reply to a question by Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont). Mr Wilkinson asked the Minister to inform members regarding the export of bobby calf meat, and especially how it came about that, after prohibiting the export of it and the consequent loss in price to the farmers, who were compelled to sell at gift figures, the embargo was suddenly lifted. The Minister was asked also who obtained the profit on that “extraordinary transaction,” and whether the prohibition of export was effected at the instigation of the Meat Board, or the Government, “The prohibition war under the instruction of the British Ministry of Agriculture, dated July 9,“ replied the Minister, “This read: ‘Until future policy decided upon no further quantities of beef to be loaded to scanners,’ The definite instruction was given effect? and all exporters we~e notified. Subsequently when the United Kingdom Government was prepar ed to release the veal and boneless beef of one operator, I refused this unless the holdings of all other operators were released. This permission was finally obtained, so that boneless beef and veal held by all operators as at July 12 (the date of the Order-in-Council) has been released.” Mr W. J.
