OBITUARY

MR. F. R. BYLES The death occurred at a private hospital this morning of Mr. Frank Roussel Byles, at the age of 67 years. Mr. Byles had been in ill-health for a long period. Born at Henley-on-Thames, in 1867. Mr. Byles came to New Zealand at the age of about 16 years, both his parents having died. After his arrival he followed various occupations in different parts of the province, but before he was 25 he took up school teaching, occupying positions, among others, at Hokianga, Warkworth and Portland. While he was teaching at Tokatoka he married Miss McDonald, the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. McDonald, and they lived in various districts until they settled at Mangapai about 26 years ago. In October, 1933, they came to live in Whangarei, but unfortunately both Mr. and Mrs. Byles. suffered ill-health, and Mrs. Byles died on June 3 last. Both were well known and highly respected in the district.

There are two sons and six daughters. The sons are Mr. W. Byles and Mr. A. L. Byles (both of Oakleigh), and the daughters are Mrs. H. L. Vaile (Waipu), Mrs. L. S. Berridge (Tokatoka), Mrs. A. E. Carter (Oakleigh), Mrs. G. E. McCullough (Mangapai), Mrs. N. C. Hart (Ruakaka) and Mrs. V. H. Grantham.(Ruatangata East). There are nine grandchildren. Mr Byles was a P.M. of the Star of the North Lodge, No". 1647, E.C., and also a member of the Grand Lodge, E.C. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon, leaving Christ Church for the Mangapai cemetery. MR. GEORGE TINDLE The death occurred at Hamilton on Tuesday of Mr. Geo. Tindle, a resident of Hamilton for the past 25 years. Born at Bloomfleet, England, 70 years, ago, Mr, Tindle came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Tainui in 1887. For many years he .was "County Clerk at Manaia, later taking over the position of secretary to the Taranaki Co-op. Dairy Company, The deceased was a Justice of the Peace for nearly 40 years. He is survived by two sons, Mr. Geo. Tindle, of Auckland,, and Mr. Egmont Tindle, of Frankton. His wife died six years ago. , COLONEL G. A. AUCKLAND, This Day. . A pioneer of Onehunga, Mr Thomas Mcßeynolds, died at his home in Trafalgar Street, yesterday afternoon, in his 90th year. He had lived at Qnehunga for 87 years, and was the last survivor of the company of 256 passengers who reached the Waitemata in the ship Ramillies ;bn August 5, 1847. This was the pioneer contingent of the Loyal New Zealand Fencibles, comprising 80 men, accompanied by their wives and families, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Bolton and Captain Kenny.

The death occurred last evening at her home at 35, Bassett Road, Remuera, of Mrs Jessie McMillan, one of the leading citizens of Auckland in its early history, in her 89th year. Mrs McMillan travelled a great deal, and a meeting with President Lincoln and a trip through the United States at the time of the Civil War were some of the prominent events in her life. Born at Beith, near Glasgow, she came to New Zealand in 1849, - her father being Mr Archibald Clark, founder of the firm of Archibald Clark and Sons, Ltd. In 1862 she went Home with her parents to complete her education in Scotland, and it was on this trip that they passed through America during the progress of the Civil War. In 1871 she married Mr C. C. McMillan, who was a prominent businessman in Auckland, and’ after his retirement from active business they spent much time in travelling, residing in England for periods. They returned’to Auckland nn 1926 and took up residence at Remuera, where " .Mrs. McMillan had resided since the death of her husband about seven year's ago. Mrs McMillan is survived by a family of one son, Mr Gibson McMillan, of Auckland, and three daughters, Mrs Harold Bull, of Puketutu Island, Mrs Frank Bull, of Mangere, and Mrs M. E. Major. There are eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

MR RICHARD PATTERSON.

The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mr Richard Patterson, at the age of 78 years, Mr Patterson was born in Albert Barracks, Auckland, and at the age of eight he visited Hamilton. He lived for some years at Kihikihi. Mr Patterson was a member of the Armed Constabulary. He later joined the police force and was stationed at Blenheim, Reefton, Collingwood and Hawera. For some years he farmed at Komata. He had lived in Hamilton East for the last 7 years. He married Miss Catherine O’Donnell 1 at Blenheim in 1885. Mr Patterson is survived by his wife, two sons, Messrs W, Patterson, Hikuai, and F. Patterson, Kerepeehi, and three daughters, Mesdames C. Jones, Hamilton. J. Watt, Waikino and J. Thrupp, Whangarei.
