FINANCIAL PLIGHT
FLOOD DAMAGE THE CAUSE. KIRIPAKA RIDING HARD HIT. At the last meeting of the Whangarei County Council the treasurer drew attention to the state of the finances of the Kiripaka riding. Expenditure already, he said, exceeded the anticipated revenue for the curI rent financial year. [ Taking the accounts passed for payment that day, plus outstanding accounts, the riding account would show a debit of £325, which meant that the expending power of the oth-. er ridings would be restricted accordingly. The position was serious, as ordinary maintenance work for the remainder of the financial year had to be met
The riding member, Cr. J. Morri[son, stated that the flood damage to | the roads in his riding had been most severe, and in an ..attempt to clear the slips and hold the road open for traffic, he had unfortunately to incur heavy expenditure, and there remained an enormous amount of work yet to be done. The chairman recommended that no further expenditure be undertaken until he and the engineer had an opportunity of inspecting the damage.
It was hoped that the appeal to the Minister of Public Works for financial assistance would succeed.
