AUSTRALIAN FRUIT
LIFTING THE EMBARGO. OPPOSITION 6f~qrchardists. (From Our Parliamentary Special.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Opposition to any attempt to lift the embargo on the importation of Australian fruit was expressed in remits carried by the conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation. The danger of the introduction of Oriental peach moth and vai'ious types of fruit fly and thrip was stressed. As orchardists must have the security of a permanent policy on which to build the fruitgrowing industry, it was agreed also that the Government should be asked to investigate the question of canned and dried fruit fx-om Austi’alia, which were believed to be subsidised, and canned and dried fruit and jams from South Africa. It was stated that these imports were very seriously handicapping the expansions of the industry in New Zealand.
