SHIPPING DISPUTE

There appears to be a brighter atmosphere as regards the shipping trouble here. Officials of the Seamen’s Federation arrived last night and will attend a meeting of the seamen of the .five" vessels held up today. It is possible an agreement may then be. reached.

Four o? the five ships which had been hold up at Greymouth ’by the seamen’s dispute sailed last night, following the return of the 70 seamen from Paparua prison. When the train on which the men travelled arrived, a crowd of about 1000 had assembled at the railway Nation, to which there was a. profession through the main' streets of members of the Grey Watersiders’ Union. The seamen, however, did not march as' previously, when going to prison, but recovered tlieir belongings in the town from friends, and returned to their ships at 8 p.m, The seaman stated that' tfrey were informed prior to their ! return ’ here, that the Wellington seamen’s meeting, by 300 votes to 28, resolved to ask them, in the interests’of the whole seamen’s organisation, to return to their ships and take them to sea. The, terms for the seamen were stated to include payment for the period of hold-up, with no logging or victimisation.

The Rata sailed at 0 ; p.m'. for Westport, the Poolta, at 0.30 for .New Ply- 7 mouth, the Kaimai at 10 p.m, for Wellington, and the Titoki at il p.m, ior Nelson. The crew of the Titoki signed new articles last night. - The fifth .yes-' sel, the Kaimiro, loaded, with .1,000,000 feet of white pine for Melbourne, has to wait for deeper , water on. the bar,, which may .prevail -today from the change of wind to northerly., ; Otherwise some of her cargo will probably require unloading.

MONTEREY BOYCOTTED.

The liner Monterey, which arrived at Auckland today from Los Angeles, was again boycotted by watcrsiders and her cargo unloaded by the crew. • The wharf was closed to the public, and those who reached the ship had their passes closely scrutinised by four quartermasters at the gangway.
