The annual report of the Defence Department was discussed in the House of Representatives yesterday. .Mr W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) ciiticisod the orders for trench mortars by 11\ department, ns they would I e of no use in the defence of New Zealand. Air J. A. Lee (Labour, Grey Lynn) said New Zealand should encourage, (lie iron industry, as shells would lie needed for the defence of the coasts. The best way to defend the country was to build up men, women and children, g'ving them food, clothing, physical mill and medical attention.

Mr A. M. Richards (Labour, Roskill) protested, against the increase in the defence vote until the men who returned from the last war wore adequately provided for.
