DRAWN GAME

REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY WHANGAEEI AND RODNEY. FOUR GOALS EACH. Whangarei and Rodney played a drawn game of 4 goals each in a hockey match at Kensington Park yesterday afternoon'. Rodney were winners of the White Horse Cup at the Country Week Tournament in Auckland and Whangarei were runners-up. Because of this, particular interest was taken in the meeting between the two teams. The weather conditions were wet and cold, squally showers sweeping across the held at intervals. Although a draw was a. fairly good indication of the run of play, Whangarei held a territorial advantage throughout a large part of the game. Rodney displayed good stick work. Dillon played a good game and Morrison also. The goalie, Henderson saved several difficult shots well. Challenger seemed to be a bit uncertain at times in Whangarei’s goal. There was a line spell when the teams bullied off, but the ground was wet in places, especially round the l goal-mouth. ' Whangarei attacked in the opening stages and following a long corner Burch had a shot but Rogers saved. K. Carter put his team in a nice position, but Phillips got the ball and went away up the wing to Whangarei’s circle where a few minutes later Matthew collected the ball and scored. —Rodney 1, Whangarei 0. Immediately after Hewlett came through and gave Bay an opportunity when K. Carter shot in. Hewlett was still handy, however, and got a clear shot in, which gave the goalie no chance. —Whangarei 1, Rodney 1. Following a period 'of midfield play, Bay tried another shot but Rogers was handy to save. Windley was seen in a good run but when he had a shot the ball went out.

Rodney set up a strong attack and some good stick-work and criss-cross play took them right to Whangarei ’s circle where Challenger was completely beaten by A. Morrison'. —Rodney 2, Whangarei 1. From the bully-off Hewlett got to the goal-mouth but the ball went out behind and a moment later Burch centred a trifle late and again the ball was out. Whangarei were indulging in a strong attack and three times Bay shot without success. Torkington' cleared eventually and Rodney got away, but only* momentarily and Henderson, in Rodney’s goal saved very cleverly. Whangarei were having the best of the game territorially and were unlucky not to score when Burch centred, but no one was there to accept it. Windley also sent in a nicely placed shot which failed. Rodney got control again and rapidly went to the other end, cutting through the defence, and Morrison went on to score a good goal, —Rodney 3, Whangarei 3. Just before half-time Whangarei were in Rodney’s circle and Bay succeeded in netting. —Rodney 3, Whangarei 2. Immediately after the resumption Whangarei scored again, Hewlett goaling well. —Whangarei 3, Rodney 3. Whangarei continued to attack and were keeping Rodney penned in their own half. Whangarei’s goal was in danger when Gubb came up, but Challenger managed to clear. Rodney gave sticks twice in succession' when in a. good position. Windley cleared and Bay carried on the move. Hewlett had a shot and Henderson had to come out to save. Challenger saved twice in succession when Rodney threatened. Whangarei speedily returned to the attack and there was a great struggle in the goalmouth. There were several shots and the goalie saved once, but eventually Windley got a shot in and put Whangarei in the load. —Whangarei 3, Rodney 3. A few minutes later Rodney worked back to Whangarei’s goal and Challenger came out too soon. There was a struggle in the circle, from which Hood netted. —Whangarei 4, Rodney 4. Fven play marked the concluding stages and there was no further score. Messrs «S. Oldcorn and Beasley refereed.

HANNAM SHIELD. RETAINED BY WHANGAREI. RODNEY LADIES BEATEN. Rodney ladies failed in their challenge for the Hannam Shield, being beaten by Whangarei by I goals to 2. There followed a spell of even and not very exciting play in neutral territory with Whangarei always on the look-out for an opening. Miss Tibbits had another shot, which went astray. The Rodney goalie was saving well and cleverly deflected a strong shot from Miss 'Cotter. Miss Richards carried the ball up and Miss Tibbits had another unsuccessful shot. A minute later Miss Simons had a chance and scored. —'Whangarei 2, Rodney 0.

When Rodney were dangerous Miss Burch cleared effectively' by hard hitting and Whangarei were still attacking. Their pressure eventually had its reward and Miss Tibbits again boat the goalie.—Whangarei ?>, Rodney 0. There was no further score when half-time was called. The second half started off quietly hut Whangarei soon took up the offensive. Miss Berghau, who was playing well, broke up a Rodney attack and Miss Simons centred nicely, but Miss Hutchings missed. Rodney then instituted an offensive movement and Miss T. Hutchings had to save, but in the end Miss E. Gubb got her stick to the ball and hit right through the net. — Whangarei h, Rodney 1. Whangarei missed several likely looking shots, but Miss (Jotter got her opportunity a little later and running up scored, falling over in the act.— Whangarei 1, Rodney 1. A few minutes before time Rodney attacked and a beautiful shot by Miss N. Stone beat the goalie.—Whangarei I, Rodney 2. The scores were unaltered when the final whistle blow. Messrs Goddard and Simpson refereed.
